So I've never been to a launch! I've decided it's really now or never. Me and the family are going for STS-135!

I'll be staying in Deland prior to launch day, but what should we plan for the launch. I've request congressional seating, but that seems like a long shot. Going to hope for causeway.

Is it possible/advisable to view from a hotel? What about getting a hotel close and driving from there? Any recommendations?

What time should we get to causeway? Are you allowed to set up a canopy to sleep under if I arrive at 1 a.m.?

Gee, I must sound like a complete newbie! I'm just a little concerned about meeting 1,000,000 of my closest friends!

I can't help you with any hotels, but you can only get to the causeway via scheduled bus with a prepaid Launch Transportation Ticket (LTT) through KSC, Gator Tours, Dolphin Tours, etc. Even with the now very rare congressional pass you'd be assigned a specific bus.

I haven't heard if causeway tickets will even be available to the public for the last launch. Last rumor was that only invited guests and NASA employees would have access to causeway viewing.

If no causeway tickets come up, your best bet would be to get a hotel in Titusville, like I did in '97 for my third shuttle launch. It was only a short walk across US1 in front of the hotel by the water, and you could see the launch pad about 10 miles away. It helped that it was a night launch, but the weather was excellent.

Another good place to see a launch is Space View Park. This way, if you walk to your hotel you wouldn't have to brave those long traffic jams I expect for STS-135.

See LaunchPhotography.com's Space Shuttle Launch Viewing for more info. Good luck!

If you don't already have hotel reservations in the Cape area, it may be too late. We're staying in Cape Canaveral area for the last launch and hotels there already seem booked solid.

Book rooms now while they are low. Hotels are price gouging when the date comes nearer.

The only hotel right on the river that you could view from is the Riverside Inn, a small motel. If you can get a room...

All times are CT (US)
