Orlando Sentinel: Florida wrestles with the symbols of the space shuttle's end
...there are also some unexpected issues companies and cities are facing in Brevard County, such as what to do with their company logos and city seals that feature the shuttle.

Already, the City of Titusville is giving thought to whether it wants to swap out the shuttle from its coat of arms. But removing an image that for the last three decades has become the symbol for Florida's Space Coast is not an easy undertaking. It costs money to repaint signs and vehicles and replace stationery. It's also emotionally wrenching.

Check out the picture gallery and read the full story from Sunday's Orlando Sentinel about the importance of the shuttle as a symbol for the area.

Florida Today: Will the Space Coast be same without its signature spaceship?
It's hard to imagine the Space Coast without the space shuttle.

Not just the real space shuttle.

It's hard to imagine their facsimiles vanishing: the shuttle in the playground at McDonald's on Merritt Island, shuttle signs and models adding stardust to everything from beach T-shirt emporiums to storage units, a shuttle soaring next to an eagle on the Titusville police patch.

Could the shuttle -- set to retire later this year after nearly three decades of service -- follow the moon rockets into relative obscurity? There may be an elegant Apollo monument in Titusville's Space Walk of Fame, but few businesses now sport moons.

Speaking as a local, I don't think the shuttle as a symbol will be removed from many of those businesses until there is something to replace it with. "Shuttles Sports Bar and Grill" will stay "Shuttles" for a while.

That being said, I know of a few towns who are looking to change their official town "seals" to reflect the end of the shuttle program.

Next time I'm on the space coast, I'm going to have to remember to go by the local town halls and collect some seal-marked stationery...

All times are CT (US)
