Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex release
New Space Shuttle Exhibit Opening at U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame

Space Shuttle: The Astronaut Experiences exhibit in the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame will celebrate the extraordinary talents, courage and accomplishments of Hall of Fame astronauts of the Space Shuttle era.

Through the astronauts' testimonials, unique personal experiences and authentic artifacts, the Space Shuttle exhibit will create a personal and emotional connection with Hall of Fame visitors, bringing to life the amazing stories and endeavors of the Space Shuttle men and women honored in the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame.

The new Space Shuttle exhibit is the latest chapter of the amazing story of the astronaut's journey through the American space program from Mercury, Gemini and Apollo to today's Space Shuttle program.

The grand opening of the exhibit will take place on Friday, May 2, 2008 at 2:00 p.m.

Taking part in the ribbon cutting will be Kennedy Space Center Director Bill Parsons, Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex COO Daniel LeBlanc, along with Space Shuttle astronauts Robert Crippen, Story Musgrave, Loren Shriver, and John Blaha.

Where is it located inside the Hall of Fame? Didn't see blocked off areas as being under construction in December.

They did a good job with it. Some errors but overall first rate.

I went to the ribbon cutting: 10 to 15 Delaware North Employees, four astronauts, six media types, two NASA people and three tourists.

Great stories by John Blaha and Bob Crippen about their patches.

The wing is in a separate room that you enter from behind the Apollo 14 command module, Kitty Hawk. The entrance is directly opposite the display case for the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project.

collectSPACE: Astronaut Hall of Fame opens shuttle wing
Since opening in 1990 outside the gate to the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame has honored America's early space pioneers through the exhibition of their personal memorabilia. The displays told the story of the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo veterans, all of whom were enshrined in the Hall.

Beginning in 2001 however, the Hall began recognizing a new class of astronauts: those who flew missions on the space shuttle. Those astronauts, selected for inclusion at a rate of three to four a year and now numbering 25 with the latest class of four added over the weekend of May 4, also loaned artifacts from their collections but the Hall did not have a place to exhibit them.

I am happy to report that I may be putting together an 100+ piece exhibit, similar to the Apollo 11 memorabilia display case in the Apollo section-wing of the museum, commemorating STS-1 that I am looking forward to working on.
