 U.S. Marine Lt. Wayne Coons hovers his helicopter over the deck of the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Lake Champlain in the Atlantic Ocean, as crewmen wait for him to lower Alan Shepard's 'Freedom 7' Mercury spacecraft onto the special platform. Shepard himself was also aboard the helicopter following his historic 15-minute suborbital flight on May 5, 1961. |

The next time Al Shepard was recovered, he had walked and golfed on the Moon. What a difference 10 years makes. |
