"Come work for the space program," they said. "You will be part of the exciting journey to the stars." Clean-suited technicians and engineers in the Vertical Processing Facility clean room at KSC prepare TDRS-D for mating with its inertial upper stage during processing for STS-29. |

Reminds me of the Don Knotts movie "The Reluctant Astronaut" from 1967, where a janitor is launched into space to upstage the Launch of a dentist by the Soviets. |

STS-29 was the first shuttle launch I ever witnessed, so I saw this TDRS go into orbit! A week later, I was at Edwards AFB for the landing of Discovery, which was really cool. They switched to the paved runway due to winds, and we were all set up to watch a lakebed landing, so the final approach was at a distance. Maybe as a consolation, the crew came up to our site a few hours after landing and gave some remarks, and a short time later, Discovery was towed right by us on the way to the mate/ demate device for her ride home. |

When the Shuttle landed on runway 22 at Edwards the Dryden VIP site was farther away and had a worse view of the landing than the public East Shore viewing site. I got asked to work the Dryden Gift Shop for some landings and got see it from that side about 5 times. It was like gaveling a alcoholic work in a bar. I spent more money in the gift shop than what they paid me, but I would do it again in a second. Those were some great times with some good friends I truly miss. Plus technically I guess I could say I worked for NASA during shuttle landings at Edwards. Lol |
