One of a series of images of New York City after the September 11, 2001 attack taken by the Expedition 3 crew aboard the International Space Station. A smoke plume is visible from the World Trade Center area. The ISS was flying at an altitude of approximately 250 miles. The image was recorded with a digital still camera, 20 years ago today.

One of those terrible days in life when you remember exactly where you were and what you were doing. RIP to all the lost souls from that day... and subsequently.

The photo reminds me just how spectacular the weather was that day, with a crystal blue beautiful sunshine morning. Then evil struck.

If I recall, Frank Culbertson took that shot? Remember it so well, it was like yesterday.

Extraordinary photo but very sad to think how many people lost their lives in this attack.

One holiday in America that I'll never forget. I was in San Francisco at the time, having breakfast, and saw the fall of the towers on TV. Our tour continued to Brentwood Bel Air, where we were stranded for several days, until the airports re-opened after being locked down. Fortunately we were well looked after by the tour company.

One of my work colleagues had been travelling to the USA, and was half-way across the Atlantic when the tragedy occurred. His plane was diverted to Canada, where the passengers were treated as refugees, and looked after by the Red Cross.

All times are CT (US)
