Gemini 9 pilot Charlie Bassett (left) and his backup Gene Cernan (right) discuss the Astronaut Maneuvering Unit with USAF Project Officer Ed Givens in December 1965. Several months later Bassett had died in a T-38 crash and Givens had been selected as an astronaut. Cernan replaced Bassett on the Gemini 9 crew.

Haven't seen this amazing photo before, Ed, and of course Ed Givens died in a car accident just five months after we lost the crew of Apollo 1. Had history been kinder, all three of the astronauts in this photo would doubtless have flown to the moon.
