This picture really has a lot of personality. I've talked to a few of the Group 2 and Group 3 astronauts and they all said that Bassett would have been a star had he not been killed in the T-38 crash in St. Louis. They thought a lot of him. |

At the time of his death, Bassett had been penciled in as CMP on Frank Borman's Apollo crew. We all know the See/Bassett deaths had a profound effect on who eventually flew what mission down the road. We can, however, speculate that all other things remaining the same, Bassett could have very well wound up following a track parallel to that of Dave Scott: - Pilot Gemini 9A
- CMP Apollo 8
- Backup CDR Apollo 11
- CDR Apollo 14

After GT-9A, wouldn't he have taken the track that was eventually followed by Jim Lovell? i.e. Lovell was the Apollo 8 CMP, the backup CDR for Apollo 11, and originally, the CDR for Apollo 14. Shepard was bumped from Apollo 13 CDR to Apollo 14 CDR and Lovell was assigned as Apollo 13 CDR.So, in theory, Bassett would have ended up as CDR on Apollo 13... and Lovell would have followed Gene Cernan's eventual path as Apollo 14 backup CDR, and Apollo 17 CDR. What happens to Mike Collins in all this? It gets complicated... |
