Apollo 1 astronauts Gus Grissom, Ed White and Roger Chaffee pose on the steps of the Apollo Mission Simulator at the Kennedy Space Center a week before the fatal fire at Pad 34. |

Very nice tribute to the crew, Ed. There are variations on the placement of the Apollo 1 crew patch, with some photos of the astronauts in training showing it on the shoulders and not the chest. Incidentally, the CM simulator behind them is presently in storage at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum Garber facility. The optics and other components (but not the crew compartment) were used in the filming of the miniseries "From the Earth to the Moon." |

Beautiful crew photo, painful to stare at it for any length of time. |

Three genuine heroes. A lot of memories. Such a loss. |

I've always wondered about the "rippled" look of the outer shell of the helmets for Apollo 1. Does anyone know what the theory (or the hardware inside the helmet) behind this look was? Clearly by Apollo 7 the helmets had gone back to a smooth outer shell. |

My thought is that the visor cover would be made out of some kind of light weight plastic that needed the "ripples" to give it some strength. Post fire visor covers would be made out of a material that would be flame retardant and perhaps stronger. |
