The photo of Apollo 15 backup commander Richard Gordon wearing those
yellow stripes
would also be appropriate, considering what day it is today.

(Dan Schaiewitz had suggested that the yellow stripes were to honour the troops.)

As I have explained elsewhere, the reason for the yellow stripes was probably photographic.

Prime and backup crews did their EVA training both on the same day on May 27, 1971. I have seen a roll of negatives covering both prime and backup crew training. You can see that Gordon has yellow tape over the red stripes on his suit, so I am quite sure it was to distinguish him from Scott on the same roll of film. After that the yellow tape was probably just left on the suit, so it is also present in training pics of June 30.

A fitting tribute at this appropriate sad time Ed. A very nice portrait of a space legend who stayed with the Apollo programme hoping to walk on the Moon. Unfortunately, through no fault of his own, it didn't happen, but the testimonials to him say it all.

He had it all, including some rather good looks.

My wife and I have been married since 2015 and have been together for over ten years and love each other very much... but even I felt ever-so-slightly uncomfortable last year at Spacefest when the then 87 year old Dick Gordon started talking to my wife. Damn that man had character and personality.

I remember saying to him "You really were one of the most handsome of all the astronauts weren't you?", to which he replied "Were?"!! How wonderful!!

I know how you feel. He had a way with the ladies. After meeting and talking with him, my wife remarked about how "ruggedly handsome" he was. He has been her favorite astronaut ever since.

I can't even feel sad looking at that photo, because it makes me smile too much.

Great photo tribute of a great American. The occasion for posting, not so great. Thanks for putting this one up.
