STS-114 commander Eileen Collins tries out one of the seats in the Rubber Room in May 2004. Located under the launch pad, the steel dome room floats on rubber isolators. It was the escape area used during the Apollo launches and it could not be removed when the pad was modified for the shuttle.

Guessing that she pretended to wear that Space Alliance hardhat for the camera since it was mandatory down there and just carried it around with her as she toured the safe room. There is a nice thread on here somewhere discussing that old gray concrete dungeon.
Nice picture of Air Force Col. Collins ~ Aim High.

Lovely picture of a lovely lady. She was very well received when she gave a lecture in Pontefract in April 2015. What a great achiever.

I asked her to sign that same photo when I met her. She wanted to know where I had found it, and what she was doing...

Not uncommon for people to actually want a copy of the photos they sign.

It wasn't that she wanted a copy; she had either never seen it before and/or forgot the photo existed.

I had the pleasure of meeting Colonel Collins at SpaceFest. She seemed genuinely interested in learning about those dropping by to see her. I had purchased a photo of her and she seemed surprised that it was available. The photo was taken during her jump training and she took time to describe that experience. I felt that she would continue to talk as long I wished. I eventually pointed out that I was taking too much of the time of a national hero and was beginning to feel guilty.
She was humble, articulate, and generous. I am not really a follower of the Shuttle era, but hope she continues to attend signings in the future.
