The Expedition 1 crewmembers share a light moment as they pose for their crew portrait at the Johnson Space Center in October 2000. Left to right are Yuri Gidzenko, Bill Shepherd and Sergei Krikalev. This photo hung on the wall of The Outpost for many years.

Ah, those were heady, exciting times for the Shuttle and ISS, not to mention the American/Russian partnership. I wonder what Krikalev and Gidzenko are doing now, and what they think of the state of affairs in this post-Crimea, post-Shuttle world we live in now?

As of April 12, Krikalev is serving as the representative in Moscow and St. Petersburg for Aleksei Chaly, the acting governor of Sevastopol, Crimea.

Up until 2011, Gidzenko was deputy chief of the Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center (GCTC) at Star City. Most recently, his name was floated in Russian news reports as a possible replacement for Krikalev as chief of the GCTC, though Yuri Lonchakov was ultimately appointed to the position.

All times are CT (US)
