Six of the seven Mercury astronauts plus PAO officer Shorty Powers (at right) listen as Alan Shepard talks to an audience in Washington, D.C., about his flight aboard Freedom 7 three days earlier. Shepard had been awarded NASA's Distinguished Service Medal by President John F. Kennedy before the press conference.
