The coming twelve months will see the 30th anniversary of some of my all-time favorite Space Shuttle missions. The year 1984 was a very exciting year for space history and nothing seemed impossible. Here is the crew for STS-41B during their countdown test at the Kennedy Space Center: Vance Brand, Hoot Gibson, Bruce McCandless, Ron McNair and Bob Stewart. |

30 years. Geez, like I needed to feel older.J/K, thanks for posting these Ed, and I'm looking forward to what you have this year. It's sort of the 30th anniversary of what I felt like as a kid watching the Shuttle before Challenger. |

I love seeing cross-over crews that still contained Apollo astronauts. Very much turning over the keys to the kingdom. |

And the weather looks a lot like Geneva during winter... |

And afterwards, did you grow up faster than planned too? Challenger was an eye-opener to me. |

Oh, yes. I've spoken to this in a couple other discussions here, but the post-Challenger hiatus coincided with what you might call my "formative" adolescent years. Aside from the life changes we all go through at that stage, by the time the Shuttle flew again I was no longer a space-struck kid. I still followed the program, and I still admired the people who built and flew those machines...but my eyes were a lot clearer about the technical limitations of the Shuttle and the political realities--inside and outside NASA--that simultaneously drove and undermined it. |
