On February 7, 1984, astronauts Bruce McCandless and Bob Stewart made an historic spacewalk during mission STS-41B to test the Manned Maneuvering Unit for the first time. Both crewmen flew untethered to a distance of 150 meters from Challenger. Hoot Gibson took this photo of McCandless during the early moments of his trip out.

Looked at this whilst watching the snowboardind at the Sochi Olympics. Could almost be there if Bruce had not forgotten his board.

Definitely one of the most iconic images of the shuttle/space programs. It held promises of a future that never came into being (also known as a prototype!).

Wow! Great shot. I had not seen this one before. Very ethereal.
