Just another day at the office. Pilot Scott Crossfield heads for a test chamber at the David Clark Company in August 1958 to check out the new flightsuit he will use during the testing of the X-15 hypersonic research aircraft. Crossfield seems determined to catch up on some paperwork during the test.

He looks like an accountant heading to work! This past November marked sixty years since Crossfield became the first man to exceed Mach 2 in the Douglas D-558-2 Skyrocket over Edwards AFB. Amazing that once this was the 'holy grail' of test flying but is now commonplace.

Just another day at the office!

On the flip side, I remember reading that he was in a dress shirt, tie, and slacks when X-15 #3 blew up with him inside during a static test...

I agree with the first poster, he looks like an accountant. But an accountant as the 1950's culture viewed the future - surely he has just stepped from the flying car or jet pack that he used to commute to work. His satchel holds a kryptonite sandwich and a thermos of liquid unobtainium. Great shot!

I like the look on his face. "...the need for speed..."

What a cool guy.
