Peroxide vapor is discharged from the attitude control rockets of the Lunar Landing Research Vehicle (LLRV) prior to its first flight at the Flight Research Center on October 30, 1964. A technician is at the controls, preparing the vehicle for pilot Joe Walker.

Nice photo Ed. Look at the suit being worn to protect from what must be toxic fumes.

Another photo and tribute to the men and women behind the scenes, in this case the technicians who set up these dangerous simulators before the astronauts got to fly them.

The only surviving LLRV, No. 2, is on display at NASA Dryden Flight Research Center in California. The last LLTV, #952, is on display in Building 2 at the Johnson Space Center in Houston.

Another machine that did yeoman work in preparing astronauts to land on the moon was the Lunar Excursion Module Simulator, a rocket-powered contraption tethered to a gantry which was part of the Lunar Landing Research Facility at NASA Langley in Virginia. After retirement in 1970, it was stored outside and deteriorated with exposure to the elements. Luckily, it was saved and restored and is now at the Virginia Air & Space Center in Hampton.

All times are CT (US)
