Following their arrival at Kennedy Space Center's Shuttle Landing Facility on June 20, 1995, the STS-71 flight crew takes a moment to address news media gathered to greet them. The photo was sent to me by collectSPACE member Bob McLeod, who can be seen third from left among the photographers. Bob was wondering if many other collectSPACE members have discovered themselves in official NASA photos, past or present?

Here is a closeup of Bob:

Following Robert's cameo in the Photo of the Week two weeks ago, maybe we can start a new forum, cS Member in a Photo of the Week. I know Jerry Ross would be the current winner for most appearances!

If you are serious about starting such a thread, I have one in which I appear even smaller!

Bob, yes I see you, and the woman in the blue shirt is veteran aerospace journalist Beth Dickey. The guy next to her, I do know, but can't identify his name at the moment.

Beth wrote a major ground-breaking feature article in Final Frontier magazine (March/April 1991) about the "this new" space memorabilia arena.

The article was entitled, "Tales of the Space Trade," that was a launching pad of sorts in my career throughout the 1990s. It also helped me to acquire some of my first Gemini/Apollo astronaut-owned memorabilia from the guys themselves.

In getting back to Bob's original topic in this forum, I know there are other cS members that should qualify (i.e. Robert, Ben, J.L., Jimmy, Joel, any others)?

I did find myself in a few official NASA photographs, mostly throughout the shuttle era, similar to this shuttle crew arrival press event at Kennedy. But I wasn't present during all the photo opportunities like this, and stayed many times at the news center or working on-base in another capacity.

A few others that I had appeared in were not news media related. I'll try to locate some of them as time permits, but let me first think of where they can be!

That day also I was there and I am also in the picture. STS-71 Atlantis was my first launch as a journalist. If you want I can scan the photos I took to the astronauts.

I have several NASA photos of myself in a SCAPE suit that were taken when I was getting suited up and heading to the SCAPE van to load hypergolic propellants into the second stage of the Delta launch vehicle. I did that for six Delta launches.

Randy brings up another topic in this area, this time, from cS members that were actually involved in checkout, test, installation and various support operations like he was with loading hypergolic propellant into a Delta rocket second stage.

I must ask you, Randy, what was it like to be inside a fully suited and operational SCAPE suit during such a hazardous procedure as fueling a rocket stage?

While I was never inside a SCAPE suit, there are some NASA photographs that I have of me.

Anyway, most with NASA photographers were visits and tours inside spacecraft checkout facilities here at Kennedy and Cape-side, wearing clean room attire or "bunny suits," and/or other clothing and equipment required.

Others would be on various launch pads and service structures, attending crew pre-launch/training exercises, return visits, and so on.

There are more, though, but I can't recall if any official NASA photographs were snapped.

Non-NASA photo events and activities would include visits to many Cape AFS/KSC buildings, labs, and facilities; being aboard the SRB retrieval ships, inside/atop the VAB/LCC, on most of all the pad facilities (both active and no longer in use), and more.

Highlights would be, with private photographs taken, of actual visits to Complex/Pad 39, with and without a shuttle launch vehicle attached.

Entering a shuttle orbiter while on the pad and while inside its servicing OPF-hangar, by all means, are most memorable moments in my unusual "space career."

But there are others; touring inside a 747 Shuttle Carrier Aircraft, inside crew quarters and the suiting room, a visit inside one of the astronaut fire rescue M-113 tanks, on a crawler transporter and a mobile launcher platform, in the Center Director's offices, walking alongside a few shuttle rollouts, and on the shuttle landing facility itself.

During my younger years as an avid space enthusiast with Kennedy Space Center only a few short miles away, I was able to visit the space center on a few occasions during the early 1970s, but such visits and movements were limited mainly because of my young age.

But I was fortunate to go inside Building O&C (MSO) and view an actual lunar module being prepared for her moon voyage, take a special tour around Pad 39A with a Saturn V moon rocket being readied for launch, attend Apollo/Saturn rollout ceremonies, and was invited by NASA — as a young teenage student — to attend as a representative of my school later Apollo crew-return ceremonies while inside the VAB and once for the Apollo 11 crewmen at Complex 39.

Not to mention, with every launch being a thrill for me to witness up-close, VIP-attendance for many of the later Apollo shots, all Skylabs, and Apollo-Soyuz with some of my first press credentials.

While I'm at it Ken, I probably told you this story before but just in case I haven't... I read that Final Frontier story about you in my chiropractor's waiting room back in 91. When I finished reading it I remember saying to myself "I need to meet this guy". However it was easier said than done.

I wrote a letter (it was 1991 folks, no email) to the magazine asking how I could get in touch with you. They said they couldn't help. Then I wrote to Beth Dickey and she said she couldn't help either. Then I tried long distance information which netted me nothing.

Several years later I was visiting a buddy of mine and he had a piece of Kapton from ASTP on a certificate from you. Bingo, I had your address and phone number and finally got in touch. I still have that magazine.

Joel, nice to know that you read the 1991 article, however, I didn't know it had been so difficult for you in contacting me from writing to the magazine.

I do recall, perhaps Beth, asking me something about possible inquiries from the article and how best to handle them.

But on the other hand, though, I do know of two or three direct inquires that did in fact reach me. Rather from the magazine, Beth, or another source, I cannot say nor remember.

Why yours did not, Joel, I just can't recall from so many years ago.

Anyway, though, I'm glad we finally hooked up as I do cherish our friendship and working relationship, now, for more than two decades, huh.

I generally prefer to stay behind the camera, but over the years, NASA's photographers have caught me at work. I was asked via e-mail if I would share some of those shots, so here's a quick montage of a few of them.

Some great "personal archive" NASA photos of our own Robert at work. Looks like two of them were here at Kenendy, and good to see Bill Harwood and a few other friends that I know in some of the images with you.

All times are CT (US)
