Watching the Mercury flight of astronaut Alan Shepard on television on May 5, 1961, are (l-r) Attorney General Robert Kennedy, McGeorge Bundy, Vice President Lyndon Johnson, Arthur Schlesinger, Admiral Arleigh Burke, President John F. Kennedy and First Lady Jackie Kennedy. |

I wonder where the photo was taken, it appears to be someone's office. I guess for a 15 minute flight it wasn't a problem to stand and watch it. |

From the big honkin typewriter in the foreground and the cluttered desk, I'd say it was in the secretary's office just outside the Oval Office. At least JFK did not need three television sets like LBJ did. |

It is indeed Evelyn Lincoln's (President Kennedy's secretary's) office. Below is a photo of the same room somewhat later in his term.Ed's photo was taken from the area where Kennedy is standing. Same honkin' typewriter, lamp, wall rack (now filled with flags) and credenza, but the nice zero-bezel TV with carrying handle has been carted off and replaced by books. This image came from Evelyn Lincoln as part of the provenance for the rocket bank seen on the shelf behind the president's left shoulder. Appropriate to Ed's picture, an accompanying letter reads in part "There was tremendous interest in the launching of the various men into outer space and a great deal of excitement around the White House waiting for the countdown. A member of the staff was fortunate to be at one of the launchings and ... gave this rocket to the President upon his return. It remained on President Kennedy's desk in the Oval Office for a while and then was discarded." Strangely, I was working on this picture in Photoshop just before reading Ed's post. |

David, you are correct about it being E. Lincoln's office. I believe that there is still a television on the credenza in your picture. It is to the left of the books and under the plant. The adult on the left, in the white blouse, is obscuring it with her head, but one can see the channel selector dial just to the right of her hair. It is obviously not the same model as in Ed's picture. |

A very evocative photo of Camelot and the young space program, with Mrs. Kennedy looking glamorous, as always. I remember seeing this exact picture with a caption stating Shepard's and all US flights were to be conducted in the full glare of the press and the world, in contrast to the secretive USSR program. By the way, Ed, it's spelled Jackie with an -ie, not a -y. Aren't you glad you post on this forum-you learn things every day LOL |
