Gus Grissom jokes for the camera of LIFE-photographer Ralph Morse, as fellow-astronauts Gordon Cooper, Elliot See and Neil Armstrong smile. Behind the car is NASA-photographer Bill Taub. The men were at Cape Kennedy to visit the Complex 19 facilities a few days before the launch of the unmanned Gemini 1 spacecraft in April 1964.

I thought, Gus' sign was not used to that time, but in the 1980 years. I have learned a little bit more.

You're absolutely right. In mid-sixties it meant "Look, I've just cut my finger."

Neil looks cocky to me - an unusual pose for him. Everyone looks upbeat and positive. Beautiful photographic summary of the gung ho confidence displayed by all in those early days.

I guess it must have been a great feeling, driving under the Florida sun in the knowledge that you are an astronaut. I would feel cocky too!

Ed... love looking at those Gemini era photos!

Do any exist of the astronauts actually viewing the launch of Gemini 1 (or 2)? Thank you!

John Young and Jim McDivitt were in the blockhouse for the launch of Gemini 1. The Group3 astronauts watched from a viewing stand.

Can you imagine cruisin' around in a ragtop with these guys?! What a neat shot. Maybe Gus is ordering 1 root beer float at a drive-in.

Thanks, Ed. (I knew you'd have them...)

Sad seeing two astronauts there that came so close, but never got a chance to fly.
