A condensation collar is visible around Atlantis' solid rocket boosters and forward fuselage as the vehicle makes its last climb toward orbit on the STS-135 mission to the International Space Station on July 8, 2011.

I remember seeing that during the launch through the ET camera view. Amazing image as always!

Funny — we were at the Banana Creek viewing site (alongside the Saturn V museum) and I did not notice this effect.

So how long did it persist?

These shockwaves around Mach 1 only persist for an instant or two; usually, there may be just a small instant where it shows the most.

Superb photograph. I am kicking myself as to how I managed to miss this one at the time it came into the public domain.

This is another time when we have to be grateful to you Ed for bringing a gem like this to our attention., especially when it slipped through my personal net previously. Once again, very many thanks to Ed and collectSPACE
