A rare view of the Gemini 5 prime and backup crews: left to right are Elliot See, Neil Armstrong, Pete Conrad and Gordo Cooper. The photo was taken at the Manned Spacecraft Center in Houston as the crews were announced on February 8, 1965.

As always, a great photo you've shared. This one is of particular interest to me, as it is one of a rare few that actually shows the all-civilian backup crew of Elliot See and Neil Armstrong. Under the rotation system they should have flown as the prime crew on GT-8, but for whatever (and unknown) reason, Deke decided to split them up and assign See to command GT-9.

There have been books over the years that have gathered together some of the most well known space photos; the launch of MA-6, Ed White's spacewalk, Dave Scott in the CM hatch on AS-9, Aldrin on the moon (obviously) and the launch of STS-1.

However I have always felt there should be a collection of the 'unseen' photos that define the history of spaceflight equally well. Ed's pictures certainly fit the bill - keep 'em coming Ed.

Don't hold me to this as I'll need to double-check this when I get back home, but I seem to remember it noted in some book that the reason Elliot See got bumped from GT-8 to GT-9 was because in addition to the first docking attempt, GT-8 was to feature a significant spacewalk by the Pilot. There were concerns about See's fitness level for such an activity and so Dave Scott, considered fitter and stronger, got placed on the GT-8 crew instead.

Anyone else look at that picture, shake their head and say, "Nah, Neil was never that young."
