How long has NASA required test firings of the SRBs? I believe these were performed through the whole STS era...

I believe there was an initial series of test firings at the beginning of the program and again after the Challenger disaster. Later there may have been incidental tests to check out major modifications to the SRBs.

This photo shows the enormity of the Space Shuttle system, if this is just one of the boosters. Very impressive photo.
