A nice view of the early morning launch of Columbia on mission STS-61C in January 1986, carrying a crew of seven, including Congressman Bill Nelson. Ed Hengeveld |

I have often wondered what politicians bring to a mission. I mean what did Congressman Bill Nelson bring to the mission? |

From what I've read, a REALLY low tolerance of zero G. |

If anything, having a politician onboard assured NASA of at least one vote in favor of continuing the space program when he got back. |

Wasn't that Senator "Pukin' Jake" Garn on STS-51-D? His space sickness was so bad that astronauts came up with a new scale for the severity of space sickness, with "1 Garn" being the maximum possible. |

I think you are right, I may have had them confused.

Simple: I try to select images that are special for some reason, but I don't have access to similar images in Russian space history. |

Read: "Mission: An American Congressman's Voyage to Space" (ISBN 978-0151055562).Also remember John Glenn was a politician during his Space Shuttle mission. And there were some astronauts with political aims. |

Although it hasn't been publicized as much, Nelson supposedly had a hard time in orbit as well with space adaptation syndrome. Why he flew was he was the head committee member on the house side of the hill. So when Jake Garn flew, somebody felt a member of the house should get equal time in orbit. I can't recall though if Jake was a Republican, but Bill Nelson is a democrat. |
