During a visit to the Marshall Space Flight Center in July 2007, Neil Armstrong has a casting of his footprint made to be displayed at the center together with those of other astronauts. Assisting Armstrong with the casting procedure is MSFC employee Daniel McFall.

Ed, isn't this the photo I mentioned to you some time back? Seem to recall my caption was 'Of course when we did this originally on set we had a much bigger tray'

Or something like that...

Alternatively:

'Actually young man I think you'll find you're using the cat's litter tray'

No real reason to remember it Ed!

I vaguely recall finding it somewhere and posting the link with a comment it might be of use for some future photo of the week.

What a GREAT photo!! I would love to even have a good poster of the boot tread! The only one I've seen is the Apollo 11 photo with a lot of shadow. I had a friend, Bob White, who was one of the biggest autograph collectors in the world. He had a tread print like the one in the photo and he said it was done with Neil's boot. Bob also had the largest Kennedy collection and every President's autograph.

That would have been kind of hard to do... both Armstrong's and Aldrin's lunar overboots were left on the Moon.

It's a pity, with a view to preserving the historical record, they hadn't decided to keep Armstrong's left overboot in the LM and return it to the Smithsonian as the first human footwear to leave a mark on the surface of the Moon. Of course, a good-quality Hasselblad portrait of Armstrong, facing the camera, would have been helpful too!

It would have also been good if recovery team members didn't peel just about every piece of Kapton off the vehicle.

Or if NASA didn't have Armstrong's and Aldrin's suits dry cleaned before turning them over to the Smithsonian.

Or if more thought had been given to the material used to make the U.S. flag planted at Tranquility Base so that it would still exist today.

Or that its placement was better planned in advance so that it didn't fall over when Eagle ascended.

Or if a dedication ceremony, rather than an afterthought toss, had accompanied the silicon disc carrying the goodwill messages of the world's leaders.

Or if Columbia's hand controllers hadn't been removed to be given as VIP presentations and then forgotten and subsequently auctioned by the person tasked with creating the displays.

It just underscores how caught up in the moment everyone was. Very few were concerned with how the mission's history would be presented in the decades that followed.

Yeah... There are a lot of things that NASA management didn't think of doing for that historical moment. Blame it on the space race?

Anyway, I'm sure things will be different for the first step on Mars!!

Given the significance of the moment they could have gone to the trouble of giving Neil an authentic A7L EVA boot to make the imprint; the A6L being used has a different tread pattern than the flown article.

That Apollo footprint is as fake as the recent customs claims signature! Doesn't look anything like the real thing...

So does Armstrong enjoy doing these things? I know it's for a good cause, but we know how he feels about autographs...

Resin casts made from that would make a great collectors item. I wonder if they will ever be released. I'd buy one.
