Here is a photo a bit similar to last week's. This one comes from the collection of J.L. Pickering. Preparations are being made to shoot the official Apollo 16 crew portrait in January 1972, as three stand-ins check lighting conditions. I know the guy on the left is Tony Broadway. Anybody (Lola?) know what Tony's job was and who the other two are? |

Hi Ed,Tony was the Manned Spacecraft Operations Building Administer who what ever needed to be done, he saw to it. The guys and I turned to him often for all kinds of reasons. An example: He brought coffee etc to Deke, myself and others in the Astronaut Office the night of the fire while Deke was talking to the wives and I was calling the funeral home and stayed to do whatever was needed long after midnight. He was our "right arm" and we all knew we could trust him in whatever we asked & it would not go anywhere. He was a dear friend to all of us in the office. The other two in the picture are familiar but I can't remember their names. So the photo had to be taken in the MSOB. |

Ed and Lola--This photo was part of a series of check-ins for lighting conditions prior to snapping the official Apollo 16 crew portrait. Other similar pictures show Harold Collins, chief of the Mission Support (Astronaut) Office at Kennedy--and if I am not mistaken--perhaps Bob Laird and/or Tom Lane (Lola?).Most of the photos I have are of Tony Broadway wearing bright red pants and tie along with a white jacket. Next to him, on a few different positions, is Collins in a dark suit. Tony, of course, was the MSO (also known as Bldg. O&C) building supervisor as already noted. There is a possibility, and please anyone correct me if I am wrong, that the series of photographs may have been shot at the nearby Astronaut Training Facility, mainly because of the ground backdrop showing one of the large lunar plaster landscapes that all the Apollo astronauts simulator-trained with. |

Sometimes the information that can be learned here is amazing. Ken I'd love to see a photo of Tony Broadway next to Hal Collins if you'd care to share. Also, it seems like I heard that Tony Broadway owned a restaurant/bar after he retired from NASA... any truth to that? And is he still alive and well?Noah |

Noah--How are you? Perhaps Rob can post one of my pics with Broadway and Collins as I am not equipped, yet, to do so. Yes, indeed Noah, Tony and his son, along with other fanily members, did operate a bar-restaurant in Rockledge for many years. It was one of the private hide-a-ways for many of the Apollo astronauts while they were in town. Tony has long since passed away, but his son and grandson took it over afterwards until, recently, the establishment was sold. The Broadways called me one day for a visit to see and possibly appraise all of their space memorabilia, at that time, much of it was on their office walls. Needless to say, it was a fabulous collection, and one of the best that I have seen throughout my collecting career. |

The name changed from Astronaut Office to Mission Support office after I left. Tom Lane is not in photo. The fellow with sideburns was part of the flight crew support team. Still unable to come up with their names. The Flight Crew Training Bldg had little room for this type of display when I was there, however, the quarter's conference room could have been easily used for the backdrop. Charles "Chuck" Friedland was in charge of the Astronaut office during Gemini and Apollo. He was handpicked by the guys & Deke who had great trust in him. He graduated West Point with Bill Anders. He was and still is a class act and was sorely missed when he had to resign due to family affairs. Hal Collins was Riley McCafferty's choice and he convinced Deke to hire him. |

Lola--Thanks for the good info as I didn't know that Collins was McCafferty's choice and convinced Slayton to hire him. The old Flight Crew Training Bldg. is now a part of the tour facility stop of the International Space Station and also serves as an engineering development lab. |
