On September 20, 1972, astronauts Bob Crippen, Bo Bobko and Bill Thornton emerge from the vacuum chamber at the Johnson Space Center, where they participated in the 56-day Skylab Medical Experiments Altitude Test to evaluate procedures and equipment for use in the Skylab mission planned for the following year.

But where's the cat? Hint: Read David Shayler's book "Skylab; America's First Space Station".

He even has a passing resemblance to David Guest . Certainly they're not as "clean cut" as in the picture below.

Thanks again for sharing another great pic Ed!

Best regards, Derek

Actually, he looks like G.I. Joe. Wonder if Crip has a kung-fu grip?

OK no one bit on this one, so here's the story in case you haven't heard it. Bob Crippen, Bo Bobko, and Bill Thornton noticed that the Skylab mockup used for their 56 day SMEAT test had lots of lint and all of it could not be vacuumed up, so they cleaned much of it with a pick up brush. Consequently they accumulated many "hairballs". So they decided to play a trick on the outside test conductors to make them think the crew was not alone in the chamber. They planned to have a family member help smuggle in some fast food meat free chicken bones which they would place on a used metal-tray along with several hairballs with a note saying how much the "cat" enjoyed the meal. Unfortunately, like the failed attempt by Al Bean and Pete Conrad to use a timer to take a photograph of the 2 of them together on the moon, the cat story never happened either (seems they were too busy). See David Shayler "Skylab: America's Space Station"-pages 160-161.
