Half a century ago this week, Apollo 9 stood ready for launch on Pad 39A at the Kennedy Space Center. The ten-day flight would successfully test the Lunar Module in earth orbit, bringing NASA one step closer to a lunar landing. Some observers at the time noted that flying a spacecraft without the capability for reentry would be the bravest act since man first ate a raw oyster.

Great photo. Since the flight was LEO, it doesn't get the appreciation it deserves, because it was an extremely critical mission.
