Astronaut Sally Ride prepares to photograph the launch of STS-6 from the roof of KSC's launch control center in April 1983. Ride was in training for STS-7 at the time. At left is STS-5 mission specialist Bill Lenoir. Others pictured include Richard Nygren (center), chief of the vehicle integration section of the operations division at JSC; and astronaut Bill Fisher, second right.

Ed...real nice early Shuttle-era photo!
Looking at that photo gave me an idea. Did you ever think of putting together cd-roms (similar to the flight crew photos you put together) of maybe 25 to 30 rare and interesting shuttle era photos, such as the one posted above. You can expand on that with the same type photos from Mercury, Gemini, Apollo and Skylab photos. I'm sure it would be a big seller among us cSers.

Nice idea, Tom. I'll give it some thought.

Great snap of nostalgia, Ed!
In '83 I was still at an age where most astronauts & program managers were older than I- not by much, but they seemed older.

I look at this pic now and think, 'Geez- why are they letting this bunch of kids launch a space ship!' LOL

Sally Ride... I'll never look at her the same again after reading Mike Mullane's book.

So is Bill Fisher the one in the flight suit, or the civilian clothes? The description is slightly ambiguous about that.

Lenoir has his back to the camera, and Fisher is in the flight suit.

Ed-
Was Bill Fisher a member of the STS-6 backup crew? I'm just wondering why he's wearing the patch, unless it's just an espirit de corps thing.

I believe that by that time the backup crews had been discontinued. Probably "an espirit de corps thing", as you said.

I was wondering that too. And that looks like it might be an STS-1 patch on his shoulder? Can you tell in the high res?

That might be the patch of his 1978 astronaut class, which was a bit like STS-1 as I recall.
