Forty years ago today, the Apollo 12 crew was in the middle of their training for the November lunar landing mission. Seen here during a geologic excursion in Hawaii are prime LM pilots Conrad and Bean (wearing hats) and their backups Scott and Irwin. They practice describing the surroundings from a high vantage point, as if they were looking outside through the LM windows. Ed Hengeveld |

I have to say that is an amazing image!I'd imagine that sort of thing would be one of the more fun elements of training for an upcoming mission.. |

Irwin looks cold, Scott cool, Bean (or Conrad-I can't tell which) studious, and the other one too young to be going to the moon! |

Note that the Commanders (Conrad and Scott) are not wearing sunglasses, but the Lunar Module Pilots (Bean and Irwin) are. The message: CDRs are tougher than LMPs! |

LMP's obviously know more about UV light ruining your eyesight. |

The astronauts are positioned as they would be in the LM looking out their respective window on the lunar surface. Hence the order is Irwin/Scott and Bean/Conrad, left to right as you look at the picture.

Is the gentleman standing behind the crew members Leon Silver? I've seen contemporary photos of him, but nothing from that era. The whole scene looks like the geology training episode of "From the Earth to the Moon." |

It doesn't appear to be him. Silver can be seen in this photo from the the Apollo 16 training, with the green and blue shirt (and pointing). |

It looks like the man kneeling behind the crews is Robert Parker. Don't think he was CapCom during Apollo 12. Perhaps this was in preparation for his role during Apollo 15. |

Judging from the down jacket, the pulled up collars and zipped up fronts, it's prety cold. The only really cold place on Hawaii is up near the Keck telescope on Mauna Kea and this was probably taken there. The terrain at Keck is very similar to the moons landscape with no vegetation. The other peak Mauna Loa belongs to the military and the only other lunar area that's similar to moon, is the on the big island is a national park and they'd never allow NASA to set up anything there. |
