For the Orion spacecraft the designation 'crew' module rather than the Apollo 'command' module is curious. The 'service' module designation has not changed.
I have my own guesses as to why this is but I'd like to hear what the cS community thinks as I have much respect for your opinions and input.

Perhaps they are acknowledging that true command rests with mission control - the ground? This is speculation on my part.

I think the choice of 'crew' was meant to emphasize the separation of crew from cargo. During Apollo, there were no cargo craft, and during shuttle, crew and cargo rode together.
Moving forward, the crew will ride on one vehicle and cargo will ride another.
(This is somewhat further underscored by the generic title for Orion, the "multi-purpose crew vehicle.")
