I have this Gene Kranz signed photograph, annotated with "Apollo VII team", in my collection.

Besides some obvious members of Mission Control, such as Kranz, my knowledge is limited so I'm hoping some of you can help me to put names (and maybe roles) to the faces on the photo please? Clicking the image will open it at full size.

Thanks in advance.

Based on responses and suggestions so far, we have:

  1. Steve Bales (GUIDO, Shift 2)
  2. Tom Weichel (RETRO, Shift 2)
  3. Richard "Dick" T. Brown (Communications, Vehicle Systems SSR)
  4. Larry Keyser (Operations & Procedures, Shift 2)
  5. James "Jim" Joki (TELMU/EMU for Armstrong on Apollo 11)
  6. William "Clint" Burton (EECOM, Shift 2)
  7. Jay Green (FIDO, Shift 2)
  8. Neil Hutchinson (CSM GNC)
  9. John "Jack" Kamman (CSM GNC, Shift 2)

  10. Tommy Holloway (FAO, Shift 2)
  11. Charles "Chuck" Stough (FAO, Shift 1?)

  12. John "Jack" Riley (PAO, Shift 2)
  13. Perry Ealick (AFD, Shift 2)
  14. George Ojalehto (Network Controller, Shift 2)
  15. Ron Evans (CAPCOM, Shift 2)
  16. John Zieglschmid, MD (Flight Surgeon, Shift 2)

Number 1 is Steve Bales. Number 21 is Ron Evans.

Number 7 is Jay Green. Number 12 is Chuck Stough. Chuck was my first boss at NASA JSC when I started 30 years ago this week. He was FAO (flight activities officer) for many Apollo flights.

Thanks! That's a great start to my quest.

Does anyone know of a resource that lists the members of each of the teams that worked each mission?

#2 is not Bill Moon, #9 is John "Jack" Kamman, and #11 is Tommy Holloway. I copied the Apollo 7 MCC/MOCR manning list from the Apollo Program Flight Operations 35th anniversary reunion document and uploaded it here.

That's a great document, thank you! Maybe it will jog some memories.

So from the names offered up so far, it seems likely that we are looking specifically at a photograph of Apollo 7 "Shift 2". Going against that theory, however, is that Charles Berry (Flight Surgeon) is not listed as being on any of the three Apollo 7 teams, Charles (Chuck) Stough is down as Shift 1 and Sy Liebergot was, I believe, EECOM for Apollo 8-15.

Again, thanks for the responses so far.

Apollo PAO Doug Ward offered this;

I recognize many of the people in the Apollo 7 team photo, but can add only the following to the identifications:

4 is Larry Keyser, AFD; I think 13 is Larry Armstrong, Inco; 18 is Jack Riley, PAO and 22 is John Zieglschmid, MD (not Charles Berry).

Wow, that's a lot of white shirts and skinny ties in one room. A single person wearing his coat and one guy in his Air Force uniform. Only two of them, Sy included, wearing colorful shirts with no ties. About half of them have black rim eyeglasses. Quite a group of brainpower there. Good luck in your quest Neil.

Yes, there's certainly a fashion trend!
There was a question mark against Sy Liebergot (and also because I thought he was EECOM for 8-15) but you think it's him too?

Thank you and please pass on my thanks to Mr Ward.

The Apollo 7 manning document lists Larry Keyser as "Operations and Procedures", with Perry Ealick as AFD, so I've put a question mark against that for the moment and "Larry" Armstrong isn't listed so I've done the same for now.

Since you just mentioned his name, it helped jog my memory. Number 19 in fact is Perry Ealick. He was still working at JSC in the 1990's when I was there.

Jerry Bostick offers this;
2. Tom Weichel, RETRO, 6. Clint Burton, EECOM, 8. NOT Liebergot. Neil Hutchinson, Guidance Officer, who would come unglued if you thought he was Liebergot!

Thanks again for going out of your way to help!

Neil Hutchinson isn’t on the Apollo 7 Flight Control Manning document but I found a NASA Oral History transcript from an interview he did in 2000. Interestingly he mentions that he was initially a GUIDO but switched to a CSM GNC and was basically learning the ropes on Apollo 7 before assuming the role on Apollo 8 and 9.

I decided to go to work in the Command and Service Module Branch and to become a GNC [guidance, navigation and control officer]... So I changed organizations. I went from the Flight Dynamics Branch in flight operations to the Systems Branch that was being run by Arnie Aldrich at the time. I got involved with that. I spent Apollo 7 and 8 and 9, not much on 7, I was really just trying to learn the whole scene, but I did do Apollo 8 and 9.

Wow. Isn’t it interesting how there are still fascinating little details like these that still come out after all these years?

Ed Fendell offers this;
13 is Amrstrong Procedures
3 is Dick Brown INCO
5 is Jim Joki Telemu
20 is George Ojaleto Network

I do not know who 10 is, but it is not Dr. Berry.

Dutch von Ehrenfried has been on;
With regard to the photo:
3 - don't know
10 is not Dr. Berry
20 is George O'jaletto
14-18 are probably network guys; maybe Air Force.
However, he’s given me a contact who might know. Watch this space...

Thank you, again, for more names to research! I've just found a large document on Apollo Flight Controller assignments, which is proving useful for cross referencing.

It seems that Richard "Dick" T. Brown was assigned to Communications in the Vehicle Systems SSR for Apollo 7 but was INCO for 9, 10 and 11.

Jim Joki is variously noted as being assigned to monitor Neil Armstrong as an extravehicular mobility unit (EMU) flight controller on Apollo 11 but I can't find reference to him for Apollo 7.

There is another picture of the Apollo 7 flight control team on the Manned Space Ops Association website.

Looks like Gerry Griffin Gold team. I'm quite surprised to see Sy Liebergot on this picture, because he is not listed as an Apollo 7 EECOM in the flight controllers assignment document.

Larry Armstrong's son came across this thread and confirmed in an email that his father is not pictured.
My dad was 6'4. This man [no. 13] is wearing his microphone in his right ear and my dad always wore his in his left ear.
Patrick Armstrong also shared a photo showing his father.
My Dad is in the photo attached sitting down in the front. He's next to the trash can and to his right is Neil Armstrong.
