All of the Mercury astronauts moved to Houston in 1962 when the Manned Spacecraft Center opened. John Glenn retired from NASA in January 1964 but apparently he and his family remained in Houston for some years thereafter.Glenn got elected to the U.S. Senate in 1974, which would have required him to move to Washington, D.C. Was Glenn still in Houston that whole time (between 1964 to 1974) before taking office? |

John Glenn first ran for the United States Senate in the Ohio Democratic Primary of 1964. He ran for the Senate six years later, once again in his home state of Ohio. Four years later, 1974, he won a Senate seat which he held on to for the next 25 years. So would it be safe to assume that for legal reasons, by mid 1964, John Glenn had set up his primary residence in Ohio? He would eventually have a secondary residence in Washington, DC. |

Between his astronaut and Senate career, Glenn was a vice president for Royal Crown Cola. According to his memoirs, the job resulted in Glenn and his wife moving to a New York City apartment around late 1966/early 1967. |

The John Glenn Archives at Ohio State University has an entry for a photo album labeled "Glenn home in Texas, 1962-1968," which corresponds with newspaper reports that the Glenns maintained their residence in Timber Cove (Houston) for about five years after John Glenn left NASA. |

Which then brings up the question of where were they living between 1968 and 1974? |

The Glenns lived at 3682 N. Harrison Street in Arlington, Va. from June 1958 to 1963. He was tired of commuting about four hours a day between Maryland’s Patuxent Naval Air Station and a desk assignment in temporary offices on the National Mall in DC. After he was selected as an astronaut, he stayed in Arlington even though the other six moved to Langley, Va. The family did move to the Houston area in 1963.As senator, Glenn lived in Potomac, Md. Although senators are not required to move to or live in the DC area, many do for convenience. |

The Glenns had an apartment in Columbus (likely to establish residency for his Senate bid) by February 1964, as that's where he had his injury. He recuperated, however, at his Texas home. A NYC apartment in 66/67 makes sense. The Glenns moved into a larger home in Columbus in 1974, but also maintained their Maryland home. |
