collectSPACE Cosmonaut Anatoly Filipchenko, who led two docking flight tests, dies at 94Soviet-era cosmonaut Anatoly Filipchenko, who launched on two docking tests, first for a possible Russian moon landing and then the first joint flight with the United States, has died at the age of 94. Filipchenko's death on Sunday (Aug. 7) was reported by Roscosmos, Russia's federal space corporation, and by the Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center in Star City, outside of Moscow. "Anatoly Vasilievich was a purposeful, demanding, diligent and fair person, always ready to help people. His life path was filled with honest service to the Motherland, creative work and devotion to the chosen cause," training center officials wrote in a statement. "The leadership and staff of the center, [as well as] the cosmonaut team express their sincere deepest condolences to all the relatives and friends of Anatoly Vasilyevich."  |

This is sad news. He was one of the first cosmonauts I ever met back in 1992 in Star City. Went with the first group of British students for a space camp. We watched the launch of Soyuz TM-15 live streamed from Baikonur at a large viewing room they have at the Training Center. Anatoly Vasilyevich was watching from the upper deck and someone kindly took me up to meet him. Always a friendly cosmonaut, happy to be recognized. He usually walked with a cane after hip replacement surgery.A true pioneer of a difficult and dangerous era of Soyuz flights. His first flight without a space suit. I can only imagine what difficulties those cosmonauts endured before and after their missions. Glad he enjoyed a long and full life. This only leaves Volynov and Yeliseyev from that era. The Soyuz 13 crew (Klimuk and Lebedev) were a bit younger when swapped over to prime. And Soyuz 21 (Volynov and Zholobov) being the next intact crew still alive. |
