Jack Garman, NASA engineer who 'saved' Apollo 11 from alarms, dies at 72

John "Jack" Garman, a NASA engineer whose knowledge of the computer aboard Apollo 11 saved the historic first lunar landing from a last-minute abort, died on Tuesday (Sept. 20). He was 72.

Garman's death came after a several year battle with bone marrow cancer, according to an email by his wife that was forwarded to the Johnson Space Center retiree community and then shared with collectSPACE.

"Sad to hear of the passing of Jack Garman," Wayne Hale, a former flight director and shuttle program manager, wrote on Twitter on Tuesday. "He saved the first moon landing, in case you didn't know."

Sigh... yet another Apollo hero leaves us. RIP, Jack.

Here is a nice clip of Mr. Garman talking about the Apollo 11 lunar landing.

What a shame. We didn't hear enough from him whilst he was with us, now we never will.

The short recording was too short, they cut it off just before Buzz says "we have dust now," the primary part of the segment.

Does anyone know of the "false overload" alarm?

Unless you're referring to something other than the 1201 and 1202 alarms, they weren't false — the computer was indeed overloaded, hence the alarm. But it wasn't a cause for an abort, as Garman quickly informed Steve Bales, as the computer was designed to reset itself when it became overloaded between cycles.

Ars Technica has a good discussion of the alarms and the technical details of what set them off.
