Cosmonaut Alexei Gubarev, led first multi-national space station crew, dies at 83

Alexei Gubarev, a Soviet-era cosmonaut who trained to fly to the moon but instead commanded the first multi-national space station crew, died Saturday (Feb. 21). He was 83.

...Gubarev, who joined the cosmonaut corps with the Soviet Union's second group of Air Force candidates in January 1963, logged a total of 37 days in orbit over the course of two Soyuz missions to the Salyut 4 and Salyut 6 space stations in 1975 and 1978, respectively.

Very sad news. Alexei Gubarev was also the commander of Soyuz 28 with the first czechoslovak cosmonaut Vladimir Remek on board. That made him special to both our nations.

RIP Mr. Gubarev.

Don't forget he might have looped around the Moon in a 'Zond' if things had worked for the Soviets.

RIP.

The loss of another pioneering cosmonaut. Alexei Gubarev seemed like a tough Soviet military man. He was sharp minded til the end and was a no nonsense kind of person, but could be kind hearted. He must have endured a lot over a long and full career. He was a regular at Cosmonautics Day events and his presence will be much missed.

He looked very well a couple of years ago, the last time I saw him. Like a regular pensioner from a by gone era perhaps struggling to comprehend all the changes of modern Russian society. Sincerest condolences to his family.

He wrote his autobiography (in Russian only?) according to this post from the French Conquest of Space forum.
