Mickey Kapp, a record producer who made mixtapes for NASA's early astronauts to play in space, died on June 11, 2019, at his home in Carmel, California. He was 88. His wife, Joyce Garvin Kapp, said the cause was congestive heart failure.Mr. Kapp became the unofficial music provider to the space-bound thanks to José Jiménez, a fictional comic character with a thick south-of-the-border accent who was created by the comedian Bill Dana. ...Mr. Dana, who died in 2017, was on the roster of Kapp Records, founded by Mr. Kapp's father, David. For the Gemini and Apollo programs, whose flights lasted days — the Mercury flights had lasted just hours — Mr. Kapp suggested that the cassette tapes the astronauts used for recording notes could be filled with music they liked, which they could listen to in their idle time and tape over as needed. He used his music industry connections to execute the plan. Mickey Kapp joined the collectSPACE community in 2002, and although he was not active on the forums (he posted only once), he occasionally was in touch by email. Vanity Fair profiled Kapp in December 2018 as part of a series of articles about the Todd Douglas Miller documentary "Apollo 11." |

Mikey was a great guy. He was also the creator of the TV cue cards for Apollo 7. I interviewed him by telephone a few years ago about the cue cards and how the whole idea started. He was funny, irreverent and had a great memory. Mikey also interviewed all the astronauts and produced the recordings for the Time/Life "To The Moon" book and record set. I told him that I saved up all my money in 1969 to buy that set. It is still great listening. He will be missed. Larry PS: My blog and the Apollo 10 tape got mentioned in that Vanity Fair article. |
