Cosmonaut Valery Kubasov, Apollo-Soyuz crewmember, dies at 79

Valery Kubasov, a Soviet-era cosmonaut whose three missions included the first joint flight between the United States and Russia, died Wednesday (Feb. 19). He was 79.

"Very sad to report that Valery Kubasov has passed away in Moscow," the Association of Space Explorers (ASE), a professional organization whose astronaut and cosmonaut members included Kubasov, wrote in a brief statement. "A true pioneer of spaceflight and international cooperation in space."

Selected in 1966 to train to be a cosmonaut together with other civilian engineers, Kubasov's highest-profile mission assignment was as one of the two Russian crew members for the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project (ASTP).

A moment of silence can be signified by a reply with no words and only a period.

I'll never forget meeting Valery and Alexi at the 2004 Burbank show, they were incredible to talk with and a joy to listen too. One of my favorite photos from the show is of my sister sitting on Alexi & Valery's lap. I don't know who enjoyed it more, but everyone had a great time with them.

When Valery was at the 2006 San Antonio show Valery and Alexi were telling me about the early days of the USSR space program. Valery explained how he was the first man to weld 2 pieces of metal in space and how he was able to accomplish this incredible feat. While getting setup was difficult, he was thrilled with how easy it was to weld in space. That was until he raised his welding visor and discovered dozens of holes burned into the arms of his spacesuit from molten metal spraying out. He made his way back into the Soyuz asap.

RIP

We have lost yet another amazing identity — one of the better known ones — from the early days of space exploration. I'm sure many will recall meeting Valery Kubasov at the Sims and Hankow event in San Antonio in 2006, when he appeared along with Alexei Leonov, Valentina Tereshkova and Pavel Popovich, four legends of the Soviet space program.

I feel very fortunate to have shaken Valeri Kubasov’s hand (together with Alexei Leonov's) when he was in Seattle in 2012 for the Wings of Heroes Gala.
