Cosmonaut Dmitri Zaikin died 20 October 2013 after a long illness. He was 81.Zaikin was selected as a cosmonaut in the same group as Yuri Gagarin in 1960 and was the backup commander for Voskhod 2 in 1965. He was medically disqualified in 1969 and never flew in space. He continued to work in the space programme until 1996, serving as an instructor and engineer at the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center. |

Sad news indeed. This means that from the original first detachment of 20 Soviet cosmonauts only four are still with us: Valery Bykovsky, Viktor Gorbatko, Alexei Leonov and Boris Volynov. |

Had a chance to meet Dimitry Zaikin back in 1999 in Star city. He was a modest, almost shy man, who was surprised that foreign visitors were interested in him, since he had never flown. Pyotr Kolodin was kind enough to arrange a meeting with him and of course we had a brandy toast with them. We had thought he might outlive all the flown guys. Another unsung cosmonaut hero. The last unflown of the first generation. |

collectSPACE Dmitri Zaikin, early Soviet cosmonaut who never flew in space, dies at 81Dmitri Zaikin, who in March 1960 was chosen with Yuri Gagarin as one of the Soviet Union's first cosmonauts but who never flew into space, died Sunday (Oct. 20) after an extended illness. He was 81. "The bright memory of Dmitri Zaikin forever remains in the hearts of colleagues, friends, and loved ones," officials at the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center in Star City, Russia, stated in a release on Monday. "Dmitri had a great experience and knowledge of space technology." Selected among the first 20 Soviet Air Force pilots to train as a cosmonaut, Zaikin was recruited in the same class as Gagarin, who on April 12, 1961 became the world's first person to fly in space.  |
