Eugene F. Kranz, the legendary former head of Houston Mission Control, turns 80 years old today.

Gene was born in Toledo Ohio on August 17, 1933. He graduated in 1954 with an engineering degree from St. Louis University. After that he served in the Air Force, flying jets over Korea (after the armistice). He was hired by Chris Kraft to join NASA as a flight controller. He was promoted to a Flight Director position for GT-4 in June 1965. He went on to be the lead Flight Director for the odd numbered Apollo missions, including Apollo 11 and Apollo 13. His role in helping to save the Apollo 13 crew has been celebrated in books and movies.

Gene retained his military influences in running Mission Control, with his flat-top crew cut and insistence on high standards. His iconic white vest which he wore as Flight Director is in the Smithsonian.

A very Happy Birthday and many more!
