Topic: Applicant numbers for each NASA astronaut class

After NASA has released ascan 2013 names and 6372 applicant numbers, I would like to ask about such data with each previous ascan class. According to the latest Astronaut Fact Book: "As of the ASCAN Class of 2009, 44,658 people have applied to become astronauts." According to this infographic we have some data, but not exact. Can someone have more precise data about applicants numbers for each NASA ascan classes with group 1 to 21? Any help appreciated. ------------------

As shown above, there may have been some 50,770 "applications" received by NASA, but there were a LOT less actual "applicants." Many people applied more than once, I know I did.  |

Very interesting. Anyone know why the amount of applicants for the Group 11 astronauts were so low? This selection took place in 1985... probably the busiest year in the entire shuttle program. |

That group includes two Teacher In Space candidates chosen from some 11,000 educator applicants not enumerated on that chart. |

Two Teacher In Space candidates were chosen from 10,463 educator applicants on July 19, 1985 (Teacher In Space Program applicants list), but not include in Group 11. From Barbara Morgan's biography: Morgan was selected as the backup candidate for the NASA Teacher in Space Program on July 19, 1985. From September 1985 to January 1986, Morgan trained with Christa McAuliffe and the Challenger crew at NASA's Johnson Space Center, Houston, Texas. Following the Challenger accident, Morgan assumed the duties of Teacher in Space Designee. From March 1986 to July 1986, she worked with NASA, speaking to educational organizations throughout the country. In the fall of 1986, Morgan returned to Idaho to resume her teaching career. |
