My boss and I attended an excellent talk by Kathy Thornton the other day and it started a conversation about how we all had dreamed of being astronauts as kids.

He said the factor that limited him was height. He's 6' 6". That brought up the question who was/is the tallest astronaut and what is the height limit on astronauts today.

Anyone know?

Current candidate requirements are as follows:

Pilots - between 64 and 76 inches
Mission Specialists - between 58.5 and 76 inches

As for learning who is/was the tallest, NASA used to provide a physical description (including height) with their astronaut biographies, but apparently no longer.

At one time it was "Ox" Van Hofften (41C,51I) at 6 foot something. For current I don't know. I think Anna Fisher is still the smallest.

I would have guessed that Nancy Currie was one of the shortest (height limited) astronauts.

Or Parazynski's counterpart, "Too Short" Lawrence (Wendy Lawrence).

And yes, they did have those monikers on their name tags....

How long/short is Steve Smith? I guess he is one of the taller guys within the US astronaut corps.

Joe Allen was quite small. There, somewhere, is a video of him being extracted from one of the storage lockers on the shuttle.

He was not really pulled from the locker - he was situated behind the entire row of lockers and by positioning the camera on the other end, it was made to look that way.

I read that Rick Hieb was near the limit at 6'3. I met him once and he was a bit taller than I am at 6'1.

But with 6 feet 2 inches not the tallest. Scott Parazynski has also 6 feet 2 inches.

All times are CT (US)
