Prior to his launch, I asked NASA astronaut Kevin Ford if he might help with a little tribute to Wally Schirra. He enthusiastically agreed so I emailed him the art for the Sigma 7 50th anniversary patch and asked that he take a photo of it with Suni Williams. Suni is a Captain in the U.S. Navy, like Schirra was, and was serving as commander of the ISS during the Sigma 7 50th Anniversary. On Wednesday (Nov. 14) I received this photo from the ISS. Suni is shown in the Cupola with her Soyuz spacecraft behind her. She will return to Earth with her crewmates Yuri Malenchenko and Akihiko Hoshide this weekend after 125 days aboard the ISS. She wrote: It's an honor to be part of the space program with Wally Schirra. A wonderful tribute to a space pioneer by a fellow Naval Aviator. |

A wonderful tribute, indeed, to a one-of-a-kind guy. |

I love that in the picture Suni is holding there's a turtle orbiting the earth. Apropos of that, here's a picture of Deke Slayton's turtle club pins... | |
