A private service is planned in Cincinnati on Friday for astronaut Neil Armstrong, the first man on the moon.

The Ohio native died Saturday in Cincinnati at age 82. No other information was released immediately about the service, other than that it would be private.

There have been preliminary discussions about a national memorial service for Armstrong, who often shunned publicity in the decades after his historic mission, but a family spokesman said there were no details yet.

As a mark of respect for the memory of Neil Armstrong, I hereby order, by the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, that on the day of his interment, the flag of the United States shall be flown at half-staff at the White House and upon all public buildings and grounds, at all military posts and naval stations, and on all naval vessels of the Federal Government in the District of Columbia and throughout the United States and its Territories and possessions until sunset on such day. I also direct that the flag shall be flown at half-staff for the same length of time at all United States embassies, legations, consular offices, and other facilities abroad, including all military facilities and naval vessels and stations.

"We should have a very special day to remember the man because he was the only Freeman of the burgh of Langholm ever put in place," he said.

He hoped the event could be hosted in the town's parish church later this year to honour "a famous son of the Armstrongs" in their traditional stronghold.

The MSP for Dumfriesshire has also submitted a motion to the Scottish Parliament commemorating the life and achievements of Mr Armstrong and his connections with Langholm.

Kennedy Space Center Honors Neil Armstrong Friday

Kennedy Space Center will hold a ceremony to honor former test pilot and NASA astronaut Neil Armstrong at 1 p.m. EDT, Friday, Aug. 31, at the Apollo/Saturn V Center.

Kennedy Space Center Director Bob Cabana will lead the ceremony.

Friday, August 31: Remembering Neil Armstrong

Please join us at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville, Ala. on Friday, August 31, 2012, at 9 a.m. as we remember American astronaut, Neil Armstrong.

We will gather in Apollo Courtyard around the Saturn V moon rocket to honor Mr. Armstrong’s legacy and celebrate his accomplished life and monumental contributions to space exploration.

Following a brief ceremony, visitors will be invited to participate in the release of red, white and blue balloons around the Saturn V rocket in memory of Armstrong.

There is no charge for this event and the public is invited to attend.

"This was just beautiful and it brings attention to his roots in Warren and Trumbull County. That's where he took his first flight and that's pretty awesome," said Warren Mayor Doug Franklin.

Armstrong sanctioned very few things in his name, but many said the Lunar Module Memorial was important to him.

The site was developed by the Perich family. Linda Perich Carpenter, who envisioned the site, and her daughter, Olivia Simpson, worked to get the memorial together.

"It was very important to Neil. That's why he came to this sight in 2003 to dedicate it, because he wanted the children to know that you can come to Warren, Ohio and go to the moon. That anything was possible," Simpson said.

President Barack Obama ordered flags be flown at half mast on the day Armstrong was interred, although when that will occur and where the late moonwalker will be laid to rest is not yet public.

NASA Administrator Statement on Neil Armstrong Memorial Service

Today, we pay tribute to a pioneering American; an explorer, a patriot and an individual who, with 'one small step,' achieved an impossible dream. Family, friends and colleagues of Neil's gathered to reflect on his extraordinary life and career, and offer thanks for the many blessings he shared with us along the way.

His remarkable achievements will be forever remembered, and his grace and humility will always be admired. As we take the next giant leap forward in human exploration of our vast universe, we stand on the shoulders of this brave, reluctant hero. Neil Armstrong's first step on the moon paved the way for others to be the 'first' to step foot on another planet. We have an obligation to carry on this uniquely American legacy.

NASA to Honor Neil Armstrong at National Cathedral

NASA Administrator Charles Bolden and other dignitaries will attend a public memorial service at the Washington National Cathedral to honor the life and career of astronaut Neil Armstrong on Thursday, Sept. 13. The memorial will be broadcast live on NASA Television and streamed online by the agency's and National Cathedral's websites.

The service is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. EDT (1400 GMT) at the historic cathedral, which is known as the spiritual home for the nation. Dignitaries, community and political leaders, members of the Armstrong family and members of the NASA family, including current and former astronauts, will pay respects to the first man to walk on the moon, who died Aug. 25.

A very limited number of seats will be made available to the public on a first-come, first-served basis. Those interested in attending must contact Christine Peterson.

Details regarding the service and participants will be released as plans are finalized.

Washington National Cathedral is a historic landmark symbolizing the role of faith in America, and its iconography tells the stories that have shaped the nation’s identity. Armstrong, along with fellow astronauts Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins, presented the National Cathedral with a moon rock brought back during their Apollo 11 mission. The presentation took place in a July 21, 1974 service commemorating the fifth anniversary of the first lunar landing. The iconic Space Window that later would display the sliver of lunar rock also was dedicated at that service.

Cosmosphere to Host Live Streaming Video of Armstrong Memorial

NASA Administrator Charles Bolden and other dignitaries will attend a public memorial service at the Washington National Cathedral to honor the life and career of astronaut Neil Armstrong on Thursday, Sept. 13, at 9 a.m. (CDT). The memorial will be broadcast live on NASA Television and streamed online by the agency's and National Cathedral's websites.

The Kansas Cosmosphere & Space Center will open the Discovery Classroom and welcome those who wish to gather and share in this memorial service. Following the memorial, guests are welcome to sign the Memorial Book for Neil Armstrong, located in the Cosmosphere Hall of Space Museum, next to the Apollo 11 Moon Rock Exhibit.

The Moon rock — returned by Armstrong's Apollo 11 crew — is on loan to the Cosmosphere from the NASA Lunar Sample Display Program, Johnson Space Center Education and Information Services ranch, office of Public Affairs. The Moon rock has been here since 1986, mounted in a nitrogen-case security vault.

During the national memorial service, dignitaries, community and political leaders, members of the Armstrong family and members of the NASA family, including current and former astronauts, will pay respects to the first man to walk on the Moon, who died Aug. 25.
