Does anyone have any information about artist Donald J. Mackey? He was an artist who did a lot of illustration work for NASA starting in at least 1964 and continuing into the late 70's.

You most commonly see his work illustrating the VAB and LCC, especially cut-away type work.

I knew Don Mackey during the '70s. I worked at the Kennedy Space Center and rode to work together in a 9-passenger commuter van. We talked often and he gave me several of his postcards. He even signed a 9.5 x 12" copy of his "Indian River Queen" houseboat Christmas scene for me. I still have it. I always enjoyed talking with him during those long trips to work.

I believe Don MacKay, passed away in January 2006 at age 91. Besides space art Don MacKay also did wonderful drawings of historic buildings of Manhatten.

I remember that Don also designed some space cachets, one in particular that I remember is for the USA Apollo 8 postage stamp, it is listed as #1371-27 in the Specialized Cachet Catalog of First Day Covers of the 1960's, Volume 3. Don's last name in the catalog is spelled Mackey.

There seems to be some places on the internet where Don's name is spelled with an 'e' as in Mackey, however his obit spells it as Mackay. Now who can clear this up?

Here is the obit for Don Mackay (The K is not capitalized), and yes Don did pass away on Dec. 17, 2005, which can be found here: The New York Times, January 9, 2006

Thanks so much for finding this obit. I have two of his originals and this is great. He signed them both "Don Mackey."

All times are CT (US)
