Hey, did Deke Slayton ever mention his reasons for assigning Mike Collins to Gemini 10 or the original Apollo 8 crew? Is it correct that he was assigned to Apollo 11 because Slayton felt he deserved another shot in the rotation since Collins recovered from the spinal problems that bumped him from Apollo 8?

Were there other possible assignments for Collins that Slayton was thinking of, besides those beyond Apollo 11?

As backup pilot on Gemini 7, Collins rotated to prime pilot on Gemini 10.

He was then assigned to Apollo 8. When he was medically grounded, he was reassigned to Apollo 11.

After Apollo 11, Collins was asked by Slayton to fill the backup commander position on Apollo 14, which would have led to Apollo 17 commander.
