Film restorer John Lowry has died.

John D. Lowry, a specialist in film restoration who was set to receive an Academy Plaque for his innovative Lowry Process at Feb. 11's Scientific and Technical Awards, died Jan. 21. He was 79.

Although not directly part of NASA, it was Lowry's efforts which saw a dramatic improvement of image quality on Apollo 16 and 17 via his noise reduction system. He was also responsible for restoring the Apollo 11 video in 2009.
