The Huntsville Times reports that Larry Sheaks, a backroom environment control system (ECS) specialist during the Apollo 13 mission, was killed Tuesday when the ultralight aircraft he was flying crashed soon after takeoff in Lincoln County, Tenn. Sheaks was an experienced pilot and just three weeks ago had bought the ultralight aircraft he was flying Tuesday, [Sheaks' widow, Mattie] said....He had reattached the wings to the aircraft and had done several practice runups on the runway but had not actually flown the ultralight until Tuesday, Mattie Sheaks said. Sheaks took the ultralight up Tuesday but something went terribly wrong sometime around 1 p.m. when the fatal crash occurred. Sheaks, together with fellow life support specialist George Bliss and power systems specialist Dick Brown were supporting EECOM Sy Liebergot from the backroom at Mission Control when the "Houston, we've had a problem" call came from aboard Apollo 13. From Charles Murray's and Catherine Bly Cox's "Apollo: The Race to the Moon": Liebergot called to Sheaks. "Larry, you don't believe that O2 Tank 1 [sic] pressure, do you?" Sheaks came back confidently. "No, no. Surge tank's good. Manifold's good, ECS is good." Reassured, Liebergot went back to the screens and to a discussion of the electrical problem with Dick Brown... "Larry was very proud of his participation in the Apollo program," Mattie Sheaks told the Times. "He was especially proud of his role in the Apollo 13 mission." |

What a terrible tragedy. I was proud to call Larry my friend and fortunate to have had him supporting me during that "Longest Hour" of Apollo 13. --Sy |

I just realized that together with Brownie and George Bliss, Larry Sheaks, who passed away recently, was the last of my “back room” SSR guys on Apollo 13.Sad... Sadly, as time passes, the opportunities to interact personally with those few of us remaining who were privileged to directly participate in the "grand adventure" are dwindling as we grow older. L-R: Dick Brown-EPS, George Bliss-ECS, Larry Sheaks-ECS. They were my Apollo 13 team. |
