The word "Vietnam" is authorized to be inscribed on the headstones and markers of all decedents who were on active duty on or after August 5, 1964 through May 7, 1975.

Wally Schirra was a Naval officer until July 1969.

So, as I understand it, you do not need to have actively served in the theater of military operations or adjacent waters of Vietnam to have your service during the Vietnam War recognized on a military headstone or marker.

And grave site, no, although this marker is located at the cemetery where Schirra's funeral took place. As you can see elsewhere on collectSPACE, Wally's ashes were scattered at sea in a Navy ceremony.

In Memory Of" Markers: VA provides memorial headstones and markers, bearing the inscription "In Memory Of" as the first line, to memorialize those whose remains were not recovered or identified, were buried at sea, donated to science or cremated and scattered. Eligibility is the same for regular headstones and markers.

All times are CT (US)
