Browsing through the 1975 edition of my Manned Spaceflight booklet I have come across this entry.
I recorded that the last known activity of James Lovell in September 1974 was his association with Evel Knievel in the latter's attempt to fly across the Snake River Canyon.
Does anyone know anything more about this?

With America's space programme still in full swing in the early 1970s, it was to Apollo 13 astronaut Jim Lovell (played by Tom Hanks in the 1995 movie Apollo 13) that Knievel turned to for advice. Lovell recommended a rocket specialist called Robert C. 'Bob' Truax, who Knievel boasted had worked with NASA on 'all the big space stuff from the start.'

I remember when they broadcast the Snake River jump, CDR Lovell was part of the "play by play" team along with David Frost and Jules Bergman...you can youtube it I believe.

OK, the Big Question: was the premature release of the Sky-cycle parachutes accidental or deliberate?

I have the jump on DVD from ABC Wide World of Sports. Lovell and Jules Bergman were on the broadcast team.
Evel did appear on a short-lived TV show in the late 70s called Lie Detector. He said the chutes deployed accidentally by a technical malfunction at ignition. He told the truth. Can't remember the lawyer host but I do know he was on OJ's defense team.
